Dakota

I will be taking Dakota to see the vet tomorrow afternoon so they can decide what to do about this bump that is still very sore looking and bleeds easily.   Luckily, I can take a slightly longer lunch break than normal to go home and get her , but will then have to hurry back to work.

She is doing pretty good about not licking it when I am around, but if I am occupied with something, she will sneak into another room to get a lick or two.  I usually notice almost immediately and call her back and she settles down again.  I have to have the collar on her when I’m at work and overnight, but otherwise, she gets to go without it.  Actually Dakota doesn’t really seem to mind it – she crashes into things and knocks things over and just keeps going.  🙂

Hopefully, it won’t take long to schedule the surgery to have this removed.

I was just thinking today, that it has been a long time since I’ve had an old dog.  Dakota at 12 is now an old dog and suffers from stiff joints, she tires easily and just doesn’t have the get up and go that she used to have.  It happens to all of us, of course, but with dogs it just happens much to early.

My last old dog was Red, who was an Irish Setter that I was lucky enough to have for 16 years.   He also slowed down as he got older, but he didn’t suffer from the lumps that Dakota has.  Red had some age warts, but Dakota’s lumps are all much larger.  After Red and before Dakota, I had other dogs that died of illness when they were still young (Kemo the Dalmatian at 6 and Gayle the Cocker Spaniel, also at 6), so I didn’t watch them slow down with age.

Tomorrow, I will let you know how the appointment goes.
