Finally the sun came out yesterday and by afternoon it was warm! Whew – hope the rest of the summer is sunny and warm. It can rain at night – but not 4 days of rain again, I hope.
Chester and I saw critters on our walk along the Red River yesterday – including (drum roll please) a beaver! I don’t know if it was the same beaver as last year or not – but it was sure good to see him. We also saw a Song Sparrow, but he wasn’t singing.
What I didn’t see until I looked at the picture, was the bug in his mouth.
He even turned to show me his bug 🙂
The beaver was a little more difficult to get a picture of. I first saw him when he was swimming from the far side of the river and heading further away towards my side. All I could see really were the waters parting around him as he swam, which looks about the same as when a duck or goose swims. He was far enough away that I couldn’t have seen more of the body above the water anyway. As he got closer to my side of the river, I started to think that I should see a body, so I zoomed in with the camera. Of course at that distance, it didn’t look much different in the small camera view – but I was really starting to think that it might be the beaver anyway.
So – Chester and I moved a bit quicker and went a bit further on our walk trying to catch up to him when he reached shore. We did catch up, but he was along the shore then and hard to get a picture of through the grass and branches. First picture is the zoomed in pic as he was swimming. It is also cropped quite a bit so you can actually see him instead of just the water parting as he swam.
So far on Africam today, we have seen Elephants, Zebra, Nyala, Impala, Woolly-necked Stork, Black Eagle, Cape Turtle Dove, Baboon and Bushbuck. Click here to see all the pictures from May 31st.
