Butterfly

The butterfly exhibit was open the last time I took a walk through the Assiniboine Park Zoo.  Last year they just had Monarch Butterflies and Painted Lady Butterflies.  I’ve heard they will have at least one more type this year, but when I was there all they had were Monarchs.  Of course I do love the Monarchs – they are beautiful!  It was early in the year and I’m sure there will be more next time I go.

I took some pictures of one cooperative guy who loved his orange slice so much that he allowed me to get pretty close.

I hope the Provincial Government changes their mind and allows Makoon, the bear cub to go to a sanctuary or keep him themselves until he is old enough to be released into the wild.  I don’t believe he will have much chance of survival if put out on his own at only 5 months of age.  There is a sanctuary willing to take him and willing to keep him for another year before releasing him.  At 5 months he is still a baby.

So far on Africam today, we have seen Salome and her cubs, Elephant, Nyala, Woolly-necked Stork, Duiker, Cape Turtle Doves, Giraffe, Egyptian Goose, Helmeted Guinea Fowl, and Black Eagle with chick.  Click here to see all of today’s pictures.
