August 7 – South Africa

We landed at Johannesburg Airport at 7:10 am – a little earlier than scheduled.  It was a chilly -2C – the coldest day for the year.  There were a few flakes of snow coming down too and there was frost on my little window on the plane.  I didn’t get much (if any) sleep on this flight either so I expect I will sleep well once I have a bed to sleep in.

Shortly before arriving, I saw my first African sunrise from the plane.   I will be seeing many more in the next few weeks.

After arriving in Johannesburg, I had to find Vodacom to pick up my phone and then I got onto a little plane heading to Nelspruit with about 10 others.

Penny and her husband Jurek met me at the airport there and took me back to their place for a shower and change of clothes.  Then we headed over to Kuger National Park for the rest of the afternoon.  I picked up my Wild Card and found out the process for entering Kruger on my own.

What an amazing day.  We  had some wonderful sightings and I took lots of pictures.  I didn’t get pictures of them all, but we still had the sightings.

First were Impalas, followed by Elephants, Giraffes, Kudu, Buffalo, Baboons, Black Stork, Hippos, Vervet Monkeys, Cape Buffalo, Saddle-billed Stork, Bushbuck, Steenbok, Bateleurs, Yellow-billed Hornbill, Duiker, Waterbuck, Zebra, Wildebeest, Hyaena.

Jurek and Penny prepared barbequed trout with potatoes for dinner.   Absolutely delicious!  Penny and I are both Africam addicts (which is how we met), so we checked in on Africam and then had an early bedtime.
