I slept a little bit, off and on throughout the flight to Frankfurt, but was awake much too early. We landed right on time. I think South African Airline is always right on time. I only had about 3 hours to wait at Frankfurt this time and they were willing to give out the gates much earlier, so I could wait at my gate.
Lufthansa Airline began a strike this morning and my next flight is booked with them – but is run by Air Canada. So, luckily my flight wasn’t disrupted. There was a huge lineup at the Lufthansa counter.
Air Canada is much less organized than South African Air. About 1 1/2 hours before the flight, they were having everyone line up for passport validation. That lineup still hadn’t cleared, when they asked everyone to line up again for boarding. So, they had 2 big lineups going through the same counter – one for boarding and one for passport validation. Both lineups had to show both the boarding pass and the passport in each lineup. We did manage to leave on time and we kept on time until we were over Ontario. Then we lost a minute for every 5 minutes that past and we landed 20 minutes late. You would almost think I was back in Canada – LOL
No one had mentioned to me that I had to pick up my baggage at Toronto and then re-check it in, so I assumed it would continue on the same as it had when going. I had filled out my customs declaration card and handed it in without any questions, but when I got to the last door before heading for my gate, I was asked about my luggage. When I told her it was being transferred over, she told me it wasn’t and I would have to go back with an officer to pick it up and go through customs again. So – I did that and was not questioned any more this time than I was last time. I re-checked my luggage in and headed for the gate to wait for the last flight.
It is a good thing I had enough time between flights that delays like this did not make any difference. Three young men on the flight from Toronto to Winnipeg had already been on 3 flights today and this was their 4th. They had missed the connection in Montreal for the flight to Winnipeg, so had taken one from Montreal to Toronto to get this one. They had been in Italy for the last few weeks.
The next flight (run by Air Canada), left on time, but was 10 minutes late by the time we landed in Winnipeg. My daughter Angela was at the airport to pick me up and drive me home. 🙂 We almost missed each other though. I wasn’t expecting her to be inside the airport and was rushing out to look for her in the pickup area. She had arrived a little early and the guard had sent her to the parking lot though. Luckily I ended up rushing right by her and she saw me (since she was looking for me).
Now, I have to pay off this trip and start saving for the next one. It will be nice to get in contact with my friends on Africam again. I’m not used to being off-line as long as I have been.
