A new arrival at the Assiniboine Park Zoo is Hudson the Polar Bear. He is a young bear who will make his home here among the rescue Polar Bears that will be coming for rehabilitation and release once the Journey to Churchill is complete. I assume he will be kept separate, but will maybe be able to see the other bears. Hudson was born October 2011 so he is still very young and very playful so he can be quite entertaining.
It looks like Hudson has a giant Kong to play with, although he didn’t pick it up while I was there, so it might just be a piece of the fence that he can’t actually move.
I know that this is a temporary home and fundraising is going on now to build him something better. I sure hope they can find a way to avoid all the chain link fencing. I do not like looking at animals through the fences and he has 2 between us and him. We are right at the first fence and can zoom through that, but can’t get through the 2nd one. There is even a little bit of the fence showing in the bottom left of these pictures, so I didn’t make it all the way through the first fence – probably because he was so close to me when I took these. The fences are about 6 feet apart – so he was 6 feet away from me.
The old bear enclosures were much better for viewing and photographing the critters, but I know those type of exhibits where there was a pit in between the people area and the critter made it possible for the people to jump in and in some zoos that has happened. To my knowledge it had not happened here, but I can understand why they would want to avoid that. The pits from the old bear exhibits have been filled in, which then increased the size of the enclosure and gives Hudson more room to roam. 🙂 It also gives him ground instead of just concrete to walk and lie on.
