As we all are – Chester is aging. He will be 11 years old on May 1st and although he has not had a seizure for a year and a half, he is still on multiple meds to control them. He has slowed down quite a bit (at times) so our walks are shorter, but when (if) spring ever arrives, I hope we can go for somewhat longer ones.
Anyway, he has been having problems getting onto my bed lately. It is a fairly low bed, but is still a good jump up for him. If he would stay on the bed all night we could manage because I can help him up and then we could both settle in for the night. He has a routine though. 🙂 He is up and down 2 – 3 times before I go to sleep. He will stamp his feet to let me know he wants up each time and I let him know I’m ready for him by patting the side of the bed. Then he starts his jump and I grab him to pull him up. That was easier when he was wearing a collar, but I removed that when he got the lumps around his neck, but we manage each time. He finally settles down, but gets off the bed sometime while I am sleeping and then does the foot stamping to wake me up at least once during the night after that.
I decided he needed a step and all he really needed was one good solid step to get him about 1/2 up and he would be fine. I thought about building something out of wood and covering it with something to make it softer, but went into a hardware store yesterday mainly looking for ideas. When I got to the rigid insulation panels made of Styrofoam, I decided to get some of that to put together for him.
What I left with was a package of 6 pieces of 2′ x 4′ styrofoam sheets. They were 1.5″ thick, so put together they would make a 9″ step. I had some tub sealant left from when I re-sealed the tub/shower, so I glued the pieces together with that. Then I wrapped it in an old comforter and put it beside the bed.
At first he jumped right over it and onto the bed, but the 2nd time up, his back legs didn’t make it and landed on the step. The next time he just used the step. It was the same for going down. At first he went the long way down, but after using the step to get up, he decided to use it to get down too. The good news is that he didn’t wake me up at all last night. I assume he came and went as usual, but just got himself up without having to wake me. 🙂
I couldn’t get a picture of him going up or down because he moves quickly both ways, but I took a picture or 2 anyway.
I haven’t accomplished anything on my 40 bags in 40 days challenge yet – but plan on getting something done today. I said I was only going to do weekends – but this weekend is going by too fast (as most weekends do). Last weekend I had 6 bags from my bedroom (which gave me room to put Chester’s step up) plus 2 bags of boxes for recycling – so I’m not too far behind the challenge.
