A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a little mesh bag with bird food in it to put out for the outdoor birds. I used to feed the outdoor birds all the time, but when Dakota moved in I had to stop. Dakota would throw herself at the sun room window trying to get the birds out there eating. I was really afraid she would go right through the window one day.
Chester wasn’t any better when he came here, so it has been some time since I’ve fed the birds. I didn’t want to put this food where Chester would be able to see the birds, so I put it on the front step railing – over the mailbox. I can see it from the living room, but Chester normally looks more out onto the sidewalk, watching for people walking their dogs. When I’m not home, he does not have access to the living room.
This little bag of food stayed on the railing for several days without any sign that birds had seen it. I brushed the fresh snow off it each time it snowed, but still nothing until a few days ago. I got home from work and saw the bag had been moved a bit and was hanging over the mailbox instead of being on the railing. The same thing happened the next few days until I finally saw the cute little thief in action.
It wasn’t a flock of birds – it was a little Red Squirrel. He was trying to run off with the whole bag, but I had put a nail through the mesh to hold it in place. He ate as much as he could through the mesh and I stood at my window and took pictures of him.
I don’t know if the birds will get any of it.
