My taller and later blooming Iris have now bloomed – but due to the wind and the rain over the last few days, they are down on the ground. They are still pretty when they lay on the ground and I thought about taking the picture and then adjusting it so the flowers would be up. 😉
My peony is doing great this year. Several flowers are about to open and I just went out to tie them up to give them a bit of stability so they hopefully will not be down on the grass once they open. I have a tomato cage over them – but most of the stems seem to come up outside the cage. I have often pushed them inside, only to have them much too crowded in there.
Peonys have never been one of my favourite flowers. There is no doubt that the flowers are beautiful – but they are always covered in ants. When I bought this house about 30 years ago, there were lots of Peonys planted in the flower bed against the house. When we planned for some construction, I dug a few up and gave them away, but the rest were left to fend for themselves.
Two years after construction, this one plant made it’s way to the surface in the middle of the lawn. After surviving that, I had to allow it to grow so I dug out a little flower bed from where it was to my Mountain Ash tree. The roots must be way down deep, but it comes back every year and I have decided that I like it. 🙂 This was the only peony to come back, but it was one more than I expected to ever see in my yard again.
