Bunny Story

A Bunny decided that my yard would be a good place to have babies.  I’m sure every time this happens, it is a very young bunny, who may have just been born in the spring and hasn’t developed any bunny sense yet.

Yesterday morning, Chester didn’t come in immediately after his morning pee as he always does – because breakfast is served as soon as he comes in.  I went out to see what he was up to and found his nose buried beneath ground level in what was obviously a hole in the ground that wasn’t there yesterday.

My first thought was a gopher hole, since it wasn’t very big, but looking at the fur beside it, I realized it was a bunny fur, so must be a bunny hole.  It wasn’t very deep and there was no sign of any babies, so I hope she prepared the nest before she needed it.  I also hope she would know Chester had found it and decide not to put any babies in there.

There was actually another spot that had been scraped, but no hole.  Hopefully there aren’t 2 bunnies planning on nesting in my yard.

Looking at the bunny scrapings, you can even see she scraped out bunny ears and face.

Later in the afternoon when I came home from work, I stopped at my little raspberry patch and was eating the few berries that were left.  I saw something round and dark at the base of one of the bushes and touched it with my toe.  I had no idea what it was, but then it moved and I saw it was a baby bunny.

This little guy was in an ok spot – outside my yard and beside where I park my car. It was all alone and didn’t have any cover at all (other than the bushes) and it does cool down at night now.  When Chester and I head out for our walks, I’ll just have to make sure we don’t go beside the car where he would be able to grab it.

Here are the baby bunny pictures.

I don’t know if she will leave him there or if she has more babies in another spot.  I will be checking on this little guy each time I come and go now.  🙂

First check was this morning after Chester and I returned from our walk and I had put him into the yard.  The little guy had moved a bit, but wasn’t far away.

This picture is zoomed and then cropped as I didn’t want to disturb him and it was a little more difficult to get close without disturbing him.

An hour later, I checked again and could not find him.  I will keep checking though. There are several raspberry plants to hide under and lots of Creeping Charlie (although I’ve pulled tons of that out this year).

Edited to add that I found the little guy’s body a couple of days later after much looking.  Poor little thing.  😦
