This time of year, we have a lot of birds passing through Winnipeg for the spring migration. It is sometimes difficult to ID the ducks because they never seem to be close enough to be able to get a good look. Thanks to my new camera and its 50x zoom, I can get pictures good enough to help with this more than I used to. Now I know why so many birders have 5 foot lenses on their cameras.
I mentioned the other day that once I had ID’d the Bufflehead Duck a few years ago, I decided that every black and white duck was a Bufflehead. I am now getting better looks and seeing how wrong I was.
Today I got pictures of Lesser Scaups – and like the Bufflehead, I had never heard of these ones before I started taking pictures of ducks on the Red River.
Another one I saw today was a Canvasback. Again, this is not a bird I am familiar with and had to look it up online. I have seen it here before, but couldn’t remember it without looking it up.
I haven’t figured out the last ones yet, but maybe someone reading this will know what they are.
