R.I.P Jewel (July 31/96 – May 27/15)

With sadness, I am letting everyone know that my Congo African Grey Parrot, Jewel passed away yesterday.  I have no idea what was wrong as she appeared to be fine right up until the end.

While I was home in the evening, she was outside on top of her cage or climbing down to walk on the floor (as usual).  She has been fully flighted for several years now, but still chose to walk most of the time.  My house isn’t large, so it only took seconds to fly anywhere.

When I was ready to head for bed, I turned off the computer, let Chester out and then went back to get Jewel into her cage for the night as usual.  She went in when I told her to and climbed up onto her perch.  As I went to turn the light out she climbed up onto the bars above her head (as usual).  I shut one of the 2 lights off and said good night Jewel – back on your perch.  She then squawked (which was not usual) and fell to the floor of her cage.  This is about a 4 foot drop.

By the time I got over to her, she had already passed away.

She was almost 19 years old, which is still a young bird and I was expecting her to outlive me.

These are a couple of the most recent pictures I had taken of Jewel.  I feel bad that I hadn’t taken more of her lately – but I expected her to be around for many more years.

It is going to take awhile for me to remember not to say good morning Jewel when I come down in the morning and hi Jewel every time I walk into the room.  It will be strange to not have her talking behind me whenever I’m on the phone or joining into the sounds from the Africam cameras.

I assume she had a heart attack and if that didn’t kill her immediately, then the fall must have since she went straight down.  I won’t know for certain.  I will not have a necropsy done – that won’t bring her back.

I will leave you with this video of a flock of African Grey Parrots in the wild.

Good-bye Jewel – rest in peace!

  1. R.I.P. Jewel. Mavis, she may not be with you in the real world but she is still around. Continue to talk to her as i know she will hear you. I always say “Good morning” and “Good night” to dear Spotty and often feel her presence as I am sure you will with Jewel. Sending my love to you at this very sad time x x x

  2. Oh l’m so sorry to hear of Jewels passing, I lost a yellow naped Amazon and blue fronted Amazon, and they were such talkers, that it took me a long time to get use to the house being so quiet, but I do have some lovely memories of them, like you will have of Jewel. And they are two lovely photos of her, I only have one of mine, but I can still see them and hear them. Early days yet, but you will smile when you think of her in the future xxx

    1. Thank you blosslyn. My pets have always been part of the family and it hurts every time I lose one. I know it will get easier – it just takes time. 🙂

  3. I am so very sorry for your loss, Mavis. She was a lovely bird. I don’t think there is ever a “good” way to say farewell to a friend, but to have such an abrupt ending makes it especially hard, I’m sure. I hope that in time the hurt will lessen and memories will comfort you. {{hugs}} – Beth
