Ducks

I took another walk at  Fort Whyte Alive on Saturday and came home with pictures.  I actually was lost for a little while this time after following the trail that goes through the centre and heads north into Assiniboine Forest and then Assiniboine Park.  I discovered my error when I saw a fence that I knew was not on the property.  The only fence that  I would have come to was for the Buffalo enclosure and this was not anywhere near strong enough to keep a Buffalo corralled.   So – I turned back and went the right way.  😀

Most of the ducks I saw were young one and although I’m pretty sure most of them are Mallards, it is hard to say when they are not in the adult feathers.  One of them is definitely something else.

I just realized that many of you will have no idea what goes on at Fort Whyte and especially you may not know that these birds and the other critters that live there are wild and free.  They can come and go as they like – but all their needs for food, nesting, etc are met naturally.  The ducks, geese, pelicans and other birds will fly south in the late fall and then return here the next spring.
