Balloons and Squirrels

Every year I have problems with the adorable little Red Squirrels that move into the walls of my home for the winter.  I can’t blame them.  It gets cold outside and it is very easy for them to find a way inside.  My home is very old (was built in 1900) and there are many places where they can find openings.  I am not agile enough to climb on the roof to try to fill the gaps to stop them and they could probably find a way to get past anything I could do anyway.

Several years ago I bought a squirrel trap and every year I trap a few and move them into another area of the city to prevent having to hear them climbing around in my walls.  So far this year I have moved 2 over to the other side of the Red River.  I always try to get them across the river to prevent them returning.  Here is my first evacuee.

The second one was captured the next day and was dropped off at exactly the same location.  Hopefully they have met up again. It is a nice bushy area with more trees than people homes and they have plenty of time to stash lots of food away before winter arrives.

The trap has not been set the last few days since I have not been home enough between jobs to remove and release them.  I won’t take a chance on one staying trapped in there for long without water when it is as hot as it has been.  I haven’t heard any squirrels inside my walls since the last one moved out though.  🙂

You have seen pictures I have taken over the years of the hot air balloons that sometimes float over my house while Chester and I are out on our morning walks.  I’ve always wanted to go on one, but couldn’t justify the expense for an hour ride.  The other day, Groupon had a coupon for a discount of $100. from the price and after thinking about it and polling my online Facebook friends, I decided to do it.

In the near future, you will be able to see pictures from inside the balloon looking down.  I’m excited and really looking forward to this little flight.  Hopefully the wind will be blowing in the right direction to take me over my house and along the Red River – but I’ll be happy wherever we go.

The weather has to be perfect or we have to reschedule, so I sure hope my first scheduled date is the one we get to keep.  I would hate to have to put it off.

Sundance Balloons is the company I will be flying with.  Here are a couple of pictures I took of one a few weeks ago.

  1. have a wonderful time. I too have wanted to go in an air balloon. Many moons ago my daughter bought me a ticket. Due to bad weather conditions I was unable to take the journey. The flight was up near her and I lived down in Wales so getting there was difficult

    1. So sorry you didn’t get your balloon ride yet Mary. Hope you have another opportunity. I’ve heard that it is not uncommon for flights to be cancelled due to weather – but I’m hoping that mine goes as scheduled.
