The Assiniboine Park Zoo is home to the McFeetors Heavy Horse Centre, which features Percheron horses. To me, this seems like an unusual addition to the zoo, since Percheron horses are not known in the wild as far as I know. Of course, this exhibit was entirely funded by donations and the park is allowing the donor to put their money on what they want built.
The horses pull wagons in the summer and sleighs in the winter and is the only exhibit at the zoo that currently has a charge to use it. The charge isn’t much though – just $3. per person.
Back in pioneer days in Manitoba, horses were used for transportation and farming – unlike these days when they are used more for pleasure riding or showing.
Two horses were outside and posed for pictures for me when I was there on Friday.
I believe I read somewhere before that the dark one is young and will be white as he matures.
