Yesterday looked like a nice day and I had nothing in my calendar – so I headed north to Lockport to see and photograph the Pelicans around the dam on the Red River. I pulled into the park on the east side of the river when I got there and walked over to see if I could find any wildlife.
I couldn’t find any way past the fence to get right to the river this time, so I stayed at the fence and shot through the wires. Taking photos through the fence wasn’t great, but this area was a great spot to watch the Pelicans, Cormorants and Gulls. I took quite a few photos, so please feel free to click on one and scroll through larger sizes. Some photos are cropped by WordPress to fit, but the entire photo can be seen if clicked on.
I decided to head over to the west side of the river and rather than drive, I thought I would walk and maybe take some photos from the bridge. This was a good move, since I got different views that I would from either side.
On the west side, you can take stairs down much closer to the river. In the river was a duckling – all alone. He wasn’t a tiny guy, but was still fuzz covered and he seemed to be finding things to eat.
There was no sign of any other ducks or ducklings and to be sure, I walked to the other side of the dam without finding any. I am guessing he got lost from his family and went through the dam. These little guys are very buoyant so he survived and hopefully he will continue to do so on his own. I contacted Wildlife Rehabilitation and since there is no way to catch him, there is nothing they can do.
But I took more Pelican photos.
Of course, while I was on the other side of the dam, I found a few more photos to take.
