A few days ago, I was at Sardis Park/Pond and immediately noticed dead and dying birds. I was so sad to see that the Avian Influenza has returned and decided I would not be going back there until the surviving birds had left. Fortunately, they are picking up the dead birds – but I just don’t want to be watching them suffer. I don’t remember seeing birds dying at the Cheam Lake Wetlands last year, so I decided to go there this morning for my walk.
Unfortunately, there were dead & dying birds at the wetlands also. I am going to have to find a good walking trail that does not border on water in order to keep walking and not seeing dead birds. I did take several beautiful views of the wetlands & mountains so that is what I have for you to see today.
You can click on one photo and scroll through all of them in a larger size.

The Goose that I indicated more information to follow seems to be in an early stage of the Avian Influenza unfortunately. He (or she) seems to be acting normally by preening the feathers – BUT I was able to walk within a few inches of it and it did not appear to even notice me. It did not move other than to continue preening the feathers. Not far from this one, I could see about 6 dead birds in the water.
Beautiful photos (as always) but it’s heartbreaking so many birds are dying.

So sad about the birds dying. Beautiful photos , Mavis. I am walking the Arizona Trail, virtually, now. I am about 1/2 through John Muir Trail.

Thanks Sharon – I’m just going to have to stay away from the water now. It won’t help the birds, but since there is nothing I can do to help them, it is better for me if I don’t see them. 😦 Thanks for letting me know where you are walking 🙂

Very sorry to hear about this outbreak of avian flu. I know how much you love the birds, and it must be very difficult for you.

Thanks Tim – yes, it is difficult for me to see them suffering (or dead).
