I Had to Go Back to the Great Blue Heron Reserve

After seeing the adorable Great Blue Heron chick on my last drive over to the reserve, I knew that I’d be back on the next sunny day – so that is where I went yesterday.

The above Mourning Dove and the below Spotted Towhee were both very co-operative & the Towhee even allowed photos with a few different poses.

Until I arrived here in British Columbia, I had never even heard of a Spotted Towhee – but they are very common here and I see them often now.

Of course the Herons were the main reason I was here and they did not disappoint. Some of these photos are cropped to fit, but you can click on the photo to see the entire view. The photos will also be larger so you can see more details.

Now I will be waiting for them to start flying – or at least practicing at lifting off the nests.

A Cedar Waxwing (these birds I know from Manitoba) even stopped to give me a couple of poses. 🙂

Turtles on a log. I love the way the one at the back has his (or her) toes stretched out.

  1. The bigger turtle question here is: how do they keep their tan lines even? The turtle in the front has back legs extended in the air, the one in the back has back legs extended into the water. We know they can’t roll on their backs! How do they even the rays up? The price of vanity!

I do hope that the eagles leave the baby blue herons alone? And the turtles. Probably best you don’t tell me!

Stay well up there! Cheers, Stumblebum

    1. Maybe I’ll go into the Eagle/Heron relationship in another post. I’ll leave the turtle questions alone as you have thought of some very strange and interesting comments on them – LOL

      1. What can I say? I love the turtles! They bring a calm, almost snobbish dignity to the scene, even when they’re piled up on the branch like wrecks at a junkyard!

You’ve mentioned the circle-of-life equation of the eagles to the herons in the nesting phase. If unpleasantness ensues, please go to no trouble on my account! Regards, Stumblebum

    2. Oh really!! Even tan lines indeed! Everyone knows they apply sunscreen so they protect themselves. It’s a cooperative effort to apply sunscreen to all their friends.

        1. I’ll wait for the picture of turtles applying suntan lotion! I mean, if dogs can play poker, right?

I love the turtles with or without tans!
