The Start of My Second Vedder Rotary Trail Walk

Since arriving in Chilliwack and tackling the Vedder Rotary Trail last year, I have only visited bits & pieces of the trail – but a couple of days ago, I decided I would walk further and see how that went.

I started at the bridge on Vedder Road at the zero marker and I walked until I reached the bridge where I would be entering the Great Blue Heron Reserve. I then turned around to get back to my car.

When I got home, I looked at the map and realized that I had walked 1/3 of the trail (twice – going & returning to the car). That means I had actually walked 2/3 of the trail that day and there is really no reason that I can’t walk the entire trail in one day. I will have to carefully plan the right day to do this as my feet will likely be a little sore and my legs a little stiff. I have booked a few more tours with the senior’s group and don’t want to be too stiff to enjoy those.

Here are some of my photos from that walk. I put them all in one gallery so you can click on any one and scroll through the larger size photos.

The guy who caught a fish has a story of his own (even though he doesn’t know it). He actually picked up the fish & held it up and I took a photo that clearly showed his face. I never take photos of people I don’t know, but I thought I would try to find him by posting the photo on a Chilliwack page in case he wanted it. It was a good photo – but I couldn’t believe how many people jumped in and said I shouldn’t post that – in case he had phoned in sick to his job or he was avoiding his probation officer or he had told his wife he was going to work or the police were looking for him. I took the photo down. LOL

  1. Beautiful photos! What good timing to get the flopping fish. You had a good idea to post his photo. If he had called in sick, or was on the run from anyone, he wouldn’t have permitted you to take his photo! Paranoid people! I love the bird photos – the striped headed guy and the one with orange cheeks. How nice to brighten up the underpasses with art. That sparkling water looks so enticing! I want to walk there!

    1. Thanks Mary. I know I’d be happy if someone took my photo and posted it. I don’t get many photos of myself. But, since I don’t know the guy and don’t know if he would be upset to see his photo (for any reason) I thought it wise to just remove it from my FP post and not to put it in my blog. It certainly is a beautiful place to walk with the gorgeous mountains and beautiful blue water.

  2. These pictures remind me of the Saco River! Now I’m home sick!

Pretty sure that if someone is legging it from the law, dropping everything for a quick fish seems unlikely. Not to mention that his reaction to you with a camera might have been a bit different!

Anybody who has ever caught a decent fish wants to have their picture taken with it. Used to be that way, anyway!

And who’s to say that the fish hasn’t escaped from an upstate fishery and is swimming for his life from the park rangers? Let’s be even handed about this!

Wonderful pictures as always, Mavis! A shortish stretch left on the Camino Frances. Any thoughts on my next trail? Cheers, Stumblebum

    1. I was certainly surprised at the comments I received when I posted the photo also Tim. I didn’t expect that reaction from people who probably didn’t know him any more than I did (& I didn’t know him). It is quite possible that he would have been thrilled to see the photo. I have no idea if he is running from the law though. That hadn’t entered my mind. There were actually a LOT of people out there fishing and there is a possibility that some of them were wanted by police.

No idea where you should go next – but let me know where you do go so I can follow you there when I finish. With W4F down now, I can’t look to see how much further I have to go – but I’m getting fairly close to the end (I think).

      1. I also want to know where you guys go! Once I finish Camino Frances, I’m done with all the short trails on second hikes. Oh! I’ve done Tasmania just once but I’m not in the mood to do it again.

I’ve been reading your notes on W4F, Tim. I appreciate them.

        1. I have a day’s worth of steps not logged yet. Probably going to run into that weird situation where I have finished the trail, but need to add three or four more to get to 100%, then have to decide what comes next! So I will hold off on the off chance that one of you two pick a trail worth hitting, and I will start down that one! In any event, I will continue to post weird notes, leave crumbs to let you know that you are thought of! Cheers, Stumblebum

          1. Mavis – I used the email address you sent to me. I copied and pasted so there weren’t errors. It didn’t work. I said you and Tim were 6 miles ahead of me yesterday because I was sick. I feel much better today but not 100%.

    1. I will hold off on starting a new trail. Mary Mac still has a long way to go on the Camino Frances. Vehicle chamber of my deranged commentary is starting to affect me, though. I have to go to the ear doctor tomorrow!

The fires up there do not appear to be affecting your photography. Agreeable as always! Hope you are staying well! Cheers, Stumblebum

      1. The fires are all quite a bit north of where I am. (I could walk to the border) – it is only about 15 km (9 miles) south from here (but a little further if I go to the official border crossing) – but is isn’t too far away either – about 18 miles or 29 km. Since I moved here and joined the senior group, I’ve crossed the border 3 times.

        1. Tim and Mavis – Mavis is close to finishing the Jordan Trail and Tim is finished with Camino Frances. I still have 99 miles to go. I’m happy to abandon Camino Frances and go to whatever trail you two want. I refuse to do trails that are over 800 miles and more. I dislike long trails. I love completion! I’m bored with Camino Frances and it’s too long. I’m happy to leave because it’s my second time.
My email is cnormr@gmail.com because that’s easier for communication. I’m not worried about spammers seeing my address. I have a great spam filter.

        2. Three times? I will alert security!

Only nine miles! Wouldn’t you feel safer farther away from this border? All those Americans trying to get in! Stay safe up there! Would you let me know if another trail catches your eye! Cheers, Stumblebum

  3. They already know me down south there – but I might have to bail you out if you get into any trouble LOL.

I’ve walked all the trails (unless Ryan gets a new one posted in the next few days, so wherever we go will be a repeat for me, so please pick one that you haven’t walked yet and I’ll go where you go.

  4. I just saw that post and approved it Mary. I’m not sure why it wasn’t approved unless it was just because you put your email address. If both of you are on facebook, we could start a group chat with the 3 of us, so we can keep in contact no matter where we are. I have 20 more miles to go and usually walk about 5 miles a day.

      1. Figures. One of the only people on the planet with no social network accounts!

I have not been using this site as long as you, so there are lots of places I haven’t been, virtually speaking! I visited Seattle once with my son for a couple of days, with a couple of days in Vancouver as well (didn’t get in any trouble to speak of)! 359 miles around Seattle? Who’d have thought it possible?

I note that the John Muir trail was Karolina’s first visit to the States. Curious to know whatever happened with those kids – not least as Ryan lists “learning Polish” as a hobby?

I’m easy with any of the suggested trails! Just let me know when we’re all ready to go! Cheers, Stumblebum

  5. OK – I am happy with any of Mary’s suggestions. Right now I have 14 miles to go and I’m thinking that if I get moving NOW, I can finish in 2 days. We are obviously not going to stay together for too long, but hopefully stay close enough that we can still chat. I will suggest that Mary choose. and that we start on Oct 14. Just let Stumblebum and I know where we are going!

  6. Sounds good to me Mary. I went a little further than planned and did 10 miles today – so I can take it easy tomorrow and can join you on the 14th!

    1. John Muir trail tomorrow it is! I’ll just find my kilt and head out. Washing/waxing cars mowing lawns today. Busy! I may cheat a bit with the mileage I haven’t entered for the last few days so that I can maintain the right pace with you. The double edged sword of getting ahead and walking alone, but leaving comments for you, or falling behind and reading remarks, but leaving you alone up ahead! Like last summer. See you (virtually) soon! Cheers, Stumblebum

  7. I don’t think it will let you start today Mary. W4F doesn’t accommodate more than one trail per day and you are already walking on one. Just make sure you click to the new one before the end of today.

    1. I learned long ago how to get around that! I can delete my steps from my trail today and transfer them to John Muir. Then it’s like I stopped on Camino Frances yesterday and started the Muir trail today. But I’ve decided to not do that and start tomorrow and try to get some added incentive to keep up with you.
