A Day Without Hydro

We had received notice that hydro (electricity) would be off between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm yesterday. We were told to unplug most of the items to avoid a surge when power was restored, so I disconnected the tv, the computer/printer and my coffee maker. There was no mention of the fridge and oven, and the plugs were difficult to get to anyway – so I left them.

I settled out on my balcony to relax and take photos and they arrived to begin work right on time.

As soon as I saw the pole on the truck, I knew they would be replacing the old pole.

The guy was doing the electrical work – removing the wires from the old pole and getting them ready & onto the new pole. He had to move himself around in the bucket (up & down & around) with one wire at a time.

It was actually quite interesting to watch. As you can see there were plenty of wires to move from one pole to the other. The old pole was cemented into the ground and I was wondering how they would remove it.

I can’t even imagine how hot the workers were. They were wearing protective gear, which I don’t believe gives them any air conditioning. Maybe things have progressed enough so that their jackets can keep them cool – but I don’t know if that is possible.

Each wire had to be disconnected from the old pole and then connected to the new pole and as you can see, there are plenty of wires.

I missed quite a bit of this because without electricity, I couldn’t make my lunch – so I walked to A&W for a mozza burger. I didn’t want to open the fridge and lose any cool air in it. It was nice sitting in an air conditioned restaurant, so after I ate my meal, I walked over to Dairy Queen for some ice cream, that I also ate in an air conditioned restaurant.

I returned home to see that the new pole had been installed, but instead of removing the old pole, they attached the 2 together and left. They were gone by about 3pm.

I can see that many of the wires are still attached to the old pole, so I’m not sure when they will be back to finish the job. I hope we won’t be without hydro for another day.

I am interested to see if they will cut the old pole or dig up the concrete to get it out.

  1. I hope everything stayed safe in your refrigerator, nothing spoiled?! Can’t have you getting sick in the heat, Mavis!

I’m about to finish the Kungsleden trail. Open to recommendations for the next adventure! Cheers, Stumblebum

    1. I didn’t open the fridge at all until after the power was back. So nothing spoiled. ๐Ÿ™‚ I still have about 50 miles to go on Lone Star and will soon have to think about my next trail also.
