Lots of Bird Action at Cheam Lake Wetlands

This morning I decided that it was time to take a drive to the Cheam Lake Wetlands again. Now that autumn is arriving, I thought there might be more birds around and there were.

A beautiful Great Blue Heron was happy to pose for a few photos.

The Canada Geese were coming in waves after being out finding food. You can click on any of the photos to see a larger image. I was having fun trying to get 1/2 decent photos of the geese in flight.

The day started off with lots of clouds, but before too long, the sun came out and most of the clouds disappeared.

I managed to get a photo of the Heron ready to attack and just as he(or she) pulled out a minnow.

Canada Geese coming in for a landing in the water and more Canada Geese after landing.

It was nice to see so many Canada Geese around, since they all left as soon as their goslings could fly. Food is more available in neighbouring fields than at the wetlands. But now they leave very early in the morning and return late morning. They may go out to feed again in the afternoon and will return in the evening to spend the night in the water.

I don’t have anything planned for tomorrow – so maybe I’ll be out taking photos again.

  1. Beautiful photos as usual! I love the top photo of the heron’s expression. He/she looks like a wise old man in the close up.

In the USA, we call them Canadian geese and you, the Canadian, call them Canada geese. Interesting.

    1. Thanks Mary. I don’t think any of the birds that are listed as Canada have ever been known as Canadian (other than in the U.S). – LOL. The Canada Goose and the Canada (or Grey) Jay are pretty much the only birds that have Canada in the name. I may be wrong, but can’t think of any other ones.

  2. “ What is the difference between Canada geese and Canadian geese?
The vast majority of English speaking people call the goose that is large and has a black head – Branta Canadensis – a Canadian Goose, however, its original name was a CANADA Goose. Remember, the official name for any bird is its Latin name.” There’s the answer from the Internet.
