Sights While Walking At The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve

As before, I have put all the photos in one block, so you can scroll through and see the full photos, which are cropped to fit by Word Press.

As I was thinking about heading out, I decided to take one more walk around to the other side of the reserve. While I was looking at some birds, I suddenly heard a lot of noise just behind me. The bushes were so thick, I couldn’t see anything. Obviously something was catching something in there. I walked over to the side a bit and then I saw a mink racing out of the bush and into the water. I don’t know what he had (or almost had). Unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough to turn the camera on – so didn’t get a photo, but this was my first mink since arriving in B.C.

  1. Absolutely stunning photos! I love the ducks’ colorations. I’ve copied the ducks and one of the heron to send to a UK friend who’s into photography and takes beautiful photos. What great walks you take!

    1. I agree with you on the ducks Mary. They are Wood Ducks and are very beautiful. I enjoyed my walks back in Manitoba, but after moving to British Columbia, I can’t even imagine going back to Manitoba.

  2. Oddly enough, on the subject of high value fur with the animals still wearing it, I was out for a hike years ago at the Parker River refuge back in my home state of Massachusetts. Crunching across the trail on the marshy side of the island in winter, this little blur went scurrying past, right between my legs! An ermine! About 45 years ago, so no phones, no digital cameras, and film cost money! So did cameras, for that matter, and I was poor! Still remember it, though. Scared the crap out of me!

About 39 miles left on the Camino Frances. Ironic that I have gotten in most of my steps on stationary bikes and in the weight room, because an inner ear infection has kept me from walking any distance without getting extremely dizzy! Just over a week to go until I can finally see an ENT specialist on this. I feel badly about getting so far ahead of Marymac, still working through her knee replacement as she is.

Keep those blogs and pictures coming, and I will keep you posted. Do let me know if you have a next trail in mind! Cheers, Stumblebum

  3. I still have over 80 miles to go Tim – so wherever you go, you’ll be well ahead of me anyway – but if you pick one that is fairly long, I might have a possibility of slowly catching you before you finish wherever you go. I’ve done all the trails at least once, so am happy to go wherever you decide.

I didn’t even know that there may also be ermines around here. They are similar to a mink, but this one was all brown (and it was a wet brown so obviously is comfortable in the water) so it was a mink. It was also mink that I saw back in Manitoba (but I didn’t often see them there either. If this guy hadn’t been attacking something (probably a bird) in the bush, I wouldn’t have known he was there. He didn’t leave with a meal though.
