It snowed here a couple of days ago and the snow is still here! It has been several years since we’ve had snow in October, but when we have, it is usually gone the next day. This time, it just might stay until spring. 😦

I decided that I could survive a walk in the snow with the temperature around -8C this morning, so I headed to Fort Whyte Alive. I’ve often found White-tail Deer there during the winter and this feels like winter.

Ice is now covering most of the small ponds, but water is still open for much of the larger lakes.

I don’t walk on the floating boardwalk at this time of year. They are wet and slippery and the ice isn’t thick enough to hold me if I slip and fall in. Obviously some people do walk on them though.

I found a few birds that were cooperative enough to pose for a photo or 2.

Dark-eyed Junco, Downy Woodpecker, Black-billed Magpie, White-breasted Nuthatch, Canada Geese, Hooded Merganser and a Pelican.

I did find a few White-tail Deer, but only managed three photos of one of them. They usually get a bit calmer and used to people as the winter progresses.

We both saw each other at the same time and she was nervous as I raised my camera.

By the time I clicked for a 2nd photo, she was on her way.

When she was far enough away to feel safe, she stopped to look back at me long enough for me to manage one more photo.
